Little League has made important changes to the bat regulations for 2012.
If your are buying a bat for your child, or bought one recently, NABCLL would like you to know the rules before you buy: see the link here.
As in 2011, bats that have a Composite barrel are no longer allowed, unless they have been tested and approved.
A Composite bat is made with the same metal exterior as a standard metal bat, but has a "woven" graphite or carbon fiber wall on the inside. College baseball was the first to ban these bats because the ball comes off them faster than a metal bat. Now they are banned in high school. Little League also felt they were a safety risk, and banned composite bats unless they were tested and approved.
So, before you buy a bat please visit the Little League website at this link: Little League Announces Bat Rule Changes for 2012 Season.
You will find more information including a list of approved bats for Majors and below (ages 12 and under), and the regulations for Juniors and above (ages 13-18).
Please read these regulations carefully before buying or using a bat this year.
Here is a quick summary of the regulations for 2012:
Majors and below:
- same as 2011, 2 1/4" only
- composite-barreled bats banned except if on the approved list
Juniors (13s):
- composite-barreled bats must be stamped BBCOR (all BBCOR bats are -3)
- bats with no composite materials in the barrel (all-metal, all-alloy, or all-wood bats) can have any drop weight.
Seniors and Big League (14-18):
- -3 bats only
- if not all-wood, must be stamped BBCOR
